Inside the Vault

News, Makes and Moments from The Fabric Vault

Issue 01 – January 2026

A note from the Vault

As we step into a New Year, we’ve been reflecting on what a special Christmas period it’s been here at The Fabric Vault. The shop was full of chatter, festive colour, last-minute projects, and those quiet, mindful moments where we actually got to stop, reflect, and simply breathe. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who popped in, joined a class, purchased items or supported us in ways big and small.

This little newsletter is our way of opening the door a bit wider — inviting you inside the Vault to share what we’ve been making, learning, and planning together. We aim each month to share what’s happened, what’s coming up and some moments from us that we may not normally get to share with you all.

Our first edition covers both December and January, once we are in the swing of it, the newsletter will then be sent out monthly. If there’s anything you’d like us to cover or include, please feel free to let us know.

Last Months at The Fabric Vault

December is traditionally a busy month for shopkeepers and it certainly kept us busy. We had many new fabric arrivals including some extra wide (108” wide) fabrics which are just perfect for dressmaking as well as quilting and many more uses.

Newsletter - January 2026

January traditionally feels like such a long month what with the dark mornings and afternoons. This wasn’t helped by the snow and cold weather. That said, you kept us busy and we had several delightful chats with customers who are already planning their holidays to sunnier places and planning what to make to take with them.

Newsletter - January 2026

An amazing event for us in January was “An evening with Caz” held at The Hub at St Mary’s. As you know, Caz was the deserving winner of 2025’s Great British Sewing Bee on BBC TV. She bought Stuart and Dan with her and the three of them provided an interesting and humorous insight into the world of televised sewing and all that goes with it. There was a fully packed audience on what was a cold January evening, but everyone had a great time and many interesting questions were asked by the audience.

Make of the Month

Dagmar produced our make of the month for December and these were proudly showcased by John in the shop and on social media. Dagmar produced several festive waistcoats combining our suedette along with Christmas fabrics. In fact John found that more people were interested in his waistcoats or Christmas jumpers that the content which he was sharing!

We would love to include your makes of the month on future newsletters, so if you have made anything from our fabrics, please send us some pictures and a few details and we will include this and also add it to the gallery on our website. As we tell so many of you, we love choosing our fabrics and it’s amazing to see the journey of the fabric into a finished product.

Classes, Workshops & Learning

Dagmar worked hard with our teachers Kim and Jitka to co-ordinate and timetable lessons. In fact, for the first time ever our lesson timetables spill onto the reverse side of the A4 sheets that they are printed on.

We have a wide array of lessons to cater for the absolute beginner to the experienced sewist. You can find more details of lessons by popping in the shop or checking out the lessons section on our website Book Now

What’s Coming Next?

As the start to the New Year, we always try to start slowly, but those of you who know us, know that we are always full of ideas. With that in mind, we know that 2026 will bring forward lots of new fabrics, exciting lessons, more sewing retreat days and hopefully another amazing project (but we can’t share that with you just yet!)

Also we will be making preparations for our first Sewing Retreat Day of 2026 which will be on Sunday 8th February and as we speak, there are still a few spaces available! More details can be found at Sewing Retreat Days

From the Community

December was busy for us in the community, and again this was mainly based at Lichfield Cathedral.

Also at the Cathedral in December, Dagmar and her team decorated our Christmas tree with decorations hand crafted by members of the community. The tree looked amazing and the “forest” of decorated Christmas trees in the Cathedral looked truly magical.

Our “Common Threads” project draws nearer to its deadlines and we were so pleased to see so many squares being returned to us in readiness to be added to the table runner. Dagmar was busy behind the scenes working with Aiden (our photographer) to photograph and catalogue each square before she then allocated the square its own place on her computerised map of the table runner.

Dagmar also led a session, kindly hosted at Longdon Community Hall. We had some amazing volunteers attend this and they made great progress in beginning to sew the first set of squares onto the runner.

Thanks for reading, we hope that you’ve enjoyed our first edition of “From the Vault”

With stitches and thanks,

Dagmar & John
