A Table for the Nation - Fenland Black Oak Table

The Fenland Black Oak Table: 5,000 years of history

Arriving: 7 May 2025

Come and view this spectacular 13-metre-long table made from a section of 5,000-year-old black oak. Learn more about the ancient black oak it is made from and the many centuries of history it has witnessed.

The ‘Table for the Nation’ will be in residency at Lichfield Cathedral for 1 year for all to see. It will be celebrated as a magnificent piece of craftsmanship and will provide a focal point for community events, hospitality, worship, and services across the year.

A fascinating exhibition accompanies the table providing insights into the project and a brilliant timeline of historical events across 5,000 years.

Common Threads

‘Common Threads’ is a community craft project

Drawing together textile art contributions from schools, community groups and local independent businesses to create a runner to sit along the length of the table (13m).

Join us for community stitch sessions and add your contribution to this special project. See info below.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

1) Pop in during one of our stitch sessions to create a square to add to the table runner or help us to sew-on existing squares onto the runner.
2) Contact us (See note below) if you would like to create a square for your school, community group, charity, independent business, important person from Lichfield, important history moment or offer to make a square form our “bank of ideas”.

WHAT TECHNIQUES CAN I USE?

You can use absolutely any craft technique to decorate a square such as: sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, fabric paint, applique etc.

WHERE CAN I GET “THE SQUARE” FROM?

You can collect a square from The Fabric Vault, Tudor Row, Lichfield. All squares are pre-cut by us and your design must fit within the square. We have three sizes available: 3”, 4.5” or 9” square. Finished squares must be dropped off back to The Fabric Vault or brought into one of the stitch sessions in Cathedral.
