About this Lesson

Would your child love to make their own clothes?

In this exciting introduction to dressmaking, children will create a beautiful summer dress while learning the skills used to make garments from a commercial sewing pattern.

This course goes beyond simply following instructions. Children will learn how patterns work, how to adjust them, and how small changes can create different styles and looks from the same basic design.

In this lesson, children will learn:

  • how to trace and prepare a sewing pattern
  • how to choose and cut the correct size
  • how to adapt a pattern to create different dress styles
  • how to cut fabric accurately
  • how to use interfacing
  • how to create and attach facings
  • how to staystitch and why it is important
  • how to understitch for a professional finish
  • garment construction techniques
  • how to assemble a dress from start to finish

🧵 The finished dress features a comfortable elasticated high waist and can be made in a length chosen by the student.

This is a fantastic next step for children who have already completed a few sewing projects and are ready to challenge themselves with their first garment.

By the end of the course, children will have completed their own summer dress and gained valuable dressmaking skills that can be used to create many future clothing projects.

🧵 Children aged 8–12 years old must be accompanied by an adult during their first lesson. Please book one space only and let us know that an adult will also be attending.
